Can I file for child support while my baby is in the NICU?

Is it possible to file for child support for a baby that is not in my household? My baby was born premature at 30 weeks and Im trying to find us a place of our own for when she comes home.The father signed an affidavit saying he is the father and I would like to file for child support since he hasnt bought anything for her up to this point and refuses to help fund our housing.
